Number Fifteen: They Are America’s Most Popular Pet. It’s true! More people have cats than have dogs in the United States. While there are an impressive 88 million pet cats in the United States, there are just 74 million pet dogs.
Number Fourteen: They Really Do Have Nine Lives. Some cats have survived falls from up to 32 stories tall. Not only that, but some cats have survived falls from that high onto a concrete surface. Because of their reflexes, cats are able to survive very high falls onto very hard surfaces.
Number Thirteen: Their Ears Are Very High-Tech. In fact, 32 muscles control just the outer part of a cat’s ear. To compare, humans only have six muscles that control the outer ear. So don’t think you can get away with whispering a secret about a cat without them hearing it!
Number Twelve: Purring Isn’t Always a Good Sign. In fact, some cats purr to indicate that they are feeling pain. While a regular purr will indicate the cat is happy, an extra deep purr indicates he or she is in pain.
Number Eleven: They Are Capable of Holding Governmental Positions. Well, sort of. A cat has officially been the mayor of the city of Talkeetna, Alaska for 15 years. The cat’s name is Stubbs – well, Mayor Stubbs to you.
Number Ten: They Are More Hairy Than You Realize. In fact, one square inch of a cat can contain up to 130,000 hairs (on average). No wonder some cats get hair on literally everything!
Number Nine: They Aren’t Sweet. Well, they can’t taste sweet, anyway. Cats have no taste buds for sweetness, so if you give them sugar, they won’t be able to taste it. Stay tuned for part two of our list of 15 crazy cat facts you didn’t know, coming soon!
