It looks like the average runner is one step closer to having a personal theme song.

A free app for Android and iOS mobile devices called RockMyRun is designed to tailor streamed music to a runner based on the pace and intensity of his or her run.  For example, If you are out for a fast run, you may choose a speedy setting of 150 to 160 beats per minute. For a slower jog, try 120 beats per minute, and so on.  The app then creates a mix for the run which lasts up to two hours.  Once can also adjust the music genre, length of songs, featured artists, or even filter out unwanted explicit lyrics.

The app gets even more interactive when on the actual run.  By utilizing the mobile device’s sensors to detect the runner’s steps per minute, RockMyRun adjusts the music’s beats per minute to match the step count.  A slower pace will slow down the song while a faster pace will increase the song, leading to many fast beats.  The different playlists can either be streamed on the road or before the run.

Different playlists include artists such as The Cure, Hall & Oates, The Stranglers, Morrissey, Madness, David Bowie, and the Ramones while more modern playlists provide newer hits from Daft Punk, Katy Perry, Calvin Harris, Robin Thicke, and Icona Pop.

“We want to help people enjoy running more and perform better, because those are the keys to getting them to do that activity again,” said Adam Riggs-Zeigen, co-founder of San Diego-based Rock My World Inc, told the Independent.  “Music that is matched to the pace of the runner can increase the length people are willing to run, and create more positive emotions associated with the activity.”
