A picture is worth a thousand words.
Country star Brad Paisley seemed rather unamused in a recent selfie he uploaded to his Twitter account. In it, the singer makes a bemused smirk in front of a group of Westboro Baptist Church members who showed up to picket his Kansas Concert. Not to be discouraged, he tweeted the above photo with the caption “Westboro Baptist Selfie!! Or west-Burro(ass) selfie. Hopefully they can hear the show out here. We’ll play loud.” A later Instagram photo would depict the taking of this selfie, showing more picketing members of the church in the background.
In an unexpected response, The Westboro Baptist Church tweeted video of their encounter with Paisley, revealing that “”He mighta been mocking but he was certainly polite!”. In the past few years The Foo Fighters, Vince Gill, and many others were picketed by the church only to respond in a comical fashion similar to Paisley. Blake Shelton’s encounter was a much more succinct yet efficient “F—k you” as the protestors condemned him from afar.
The Westboro Baptist Church has long been a controversial and almost universally despised group in the United States. Almost every major politician has denounced the Church as a hate group, with membership has declined significantly over the years. Founded by disbarred lawyer Fred Phelps in 1955 in Kansas, the group as often been associated with picketing military funerals, anti-gay protests, and attacks against Jewish institutions. This past March Fred Phelps died, causing a social media focus on the church and the life of the religious leader.
Paisley’s tweet cam in the middle of a far reaching tour that began in early January and has taken him all over the country. This comical tweet may give him a nice amount of buzz as he spends the next month in the large northeastern cities. Paisley has been an active member of the Country Music scene since his 1999 debut album Who Needs Pictures. This current tour is to highlight his upcoming album Moonshine in the Trunk which has gained a lot of attention from the lead single “River Bank”.
