Depending on who you ask Transformers: Age of Extinction is either the most anticipated or the most dreaded film of the Summer. Either way, the fourth installment of the franchise is expected to make huge amounts of money at the box office next weekend so it’s no surprise that Paramount Pictures is in the middle of a huge advertising push for their cash cow. The latest such push occurred at the Hong Kong Premiere last night when rock band Imagine Dragons unveiled their song “Battle Cry” off of the soundtrack.
In a newly released feauturette for the song, Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds explains that the creation began with an unsolicited Skype call from Director Michael Bay asking if Imagine Dragons would like to write a song. After watching a few minutes of the film, the song “just came to” Reynolds and within minutes they were on board. Imagine Dragons have called writing the song an “eye opening experience” and “pretty special”. Reynolds went on to express that “It’s cool because this is our first time really composing as you’re watching a visual.”
Hollywood composers Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Steve Jablonsky (The Transformers Trilogy) served as collaborators with Imagine Dragons during the writing of “Battle Cry”. The skills of such veterans of creating music for visuals was greatly appreciated by the band. “The opportunity to get into the room with them kinda makes the music work. It’s a total dream come true….As we were in the room with them we’d be playing something,” he added, “they would change one note and suddenly it would give this feeling of remorse, or feeling of happiness.”
Imagine Dragons aren’t the only major band contributing to the film. Electronic music star Sonny Moore aka Skrillex is serving as Sound Designer for the film, with special focus on creating the voices for the monstrous Dinobots. He has so far described the experience of making the sounds as “creating the craziest Skrillex sounds I could ever make”. This will be a big month for Skrillex who recently led a well received Superjam at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
