The single “Amnesia” was taken from 5SOS’s (5 Seconds of Summer) self-titled debut album and made into a music video with lyrics. Not just any lyrics. Lyrics made of light projected on the Aussie pop-rock band members’ faces. Capitol Records will release the album on July 22nd. In the meantime, you can watch the video and learn the lyrics without having to take your eyes off of the four adorably heartbroken guys.

Prior to this video, 5SOS have typically had wild and silly videos to match their upbeat pop songs. We’re talking dudes dancing in spandex, mental rollercoasters, or fat bearded guys cavorting in their undies. All spunky up till now! “Amnesia” takes a totally different course, presented in all black and white with the lyrics rolling across the band’s best emo faces, and winding across the walls and furnishings of an abandoned bedroom.

Be prepared; you might just melt when you see them sing about lyrics such as, “If what we had was real, how could you be fine? ‘Cause I’m not fine at all,” and “I wish I could wake up with amnesia and forget about the stupid little things, like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you,” make you remember the time love went awry, but then you keep reading those cool lyrics on their heavy-hearted faces and you stop feeling bad for yourself.

Each band member alternates singing sorrowfully into the camera, which makes it easier to sing along if you choose to take advantage of the lyrics being present.  It’s only slightly distracting when Calum continually fixes the sleeves of his sleeveless shirt, looking as if this is the real reason he’s pouting so hard. Also slightly distracting is the fact that as Luke serenades the camera, he appears to squinting, as if his eyes have been watering due to the lyrics being shone in them for too long. Maybe that’s why they put Mikey in the shadows and project the lyrics on his forehead and spikey rock star hair, and why Ashton just looks bad ass and beautiful as he stands up and walks out of the camera frame. Overall the mysterious video matches the moody track and is a nice variation from their usual playful video themes.
