Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is going after Rockstar Entertainment over a supposed “unauthorized depiction” of her in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Lohan had threatened in early December to take legal action against the video game and now, seven months later, the time has come.
According to Lohan, a character in the video game named “Lacey Jonas” is a direct copy of Lohan’s personality and fashion style. This character features in a GTA V side mission where the player must escort the starlet without letting the paparazzi find her. Another reported instance involves a character that frequents the Gentry Manor Hotel, a stand in for the Chateau Marmot Hotel where Lohan often visited before being banned after accruing a debt of over $40,000.
The case issued by Lohan’s representatives states “The portraits of the Plaintiff (Lohan) incorporated her image, likeness, clothing, outfits, Plaintiff’s clothing line products, ensemble in the form of hats, hair style, sunglasses, jean shorts worn by the Plaintiff that were for sale to the public at least two years before the game’s release”. The case echoes an incident last year when Ellen Page criticized the makers of The Last of Us for creating a character that bore her resemblance.
Rockstar Entertainment has yet to comment on the lawsuit. Many media and legal pundits expect the case to be thrown out on the grounds that 1) The characters mentioned do not bear enough resemblance to Lohan to warrant legal action and 2) any resemblance at all to events in Lohan’s life can be protected as parody, something the Grand Theft Auto series has been known for.
Lohan is better know from her film roles The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls, but also for her 2004 Hit album Speak which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The two singles “Rumors” and “Over” were large hits that year but her 2005 follow-up failed to match its predecessor despite going Gold. Since then she has not released another album though she has continued to appear in many more films despite a very rocky relationship with the media.
