Yesterday, Monday 21st, July, 2014, marked the first ever annual Alternative Press Music Awards. The awards featured a magnificent display of rock and punk and rap talent, outdoors at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, and focused on awarding the best music of the past and present. This theme was honored throughout the night with surprise inter-generational collaboration performances, much to the pleasure of the audience. A prime example of this would be Joan Jett and the Blackhearts who, with guest guitar legend Slash, covered the Rolling Stones’ “Star Star.”  Bands such as Pierce the Veil and Bring Me The Horizon took home multiple awards.  All Time Low even converted themselves into pop-punk karaoke machine. Fall Out Boy closed out the night with an epic performance of their hit “The Phoenix,” much to the audience’s pleasure.

As Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins accepted his Alternative Press Vanguard Award, he said extrapolated on what it means to be an alternative musician: “The kids rule. Kids should always kick motherf—ers like me out of the way. There are two paths when you put on a guitar. Please the audience or push the audience’s buttons. I’m willing to push your buttons,” stated Corgan. “I’m willing to tell you to go f–k yourself. I didn’t start a band to be anyone’s b—h. I started a band to kick your f—ing head in.” Corgan pretty much summed up the theme of the night. Check out some of the video highlights from the inaugural Alternative Press Music Awards here as well as a complete list of the winners. And stay tuned tomorrow for the Encyclopedia of Music’s review of performances from APMAS.
