FKA Twigs, Formerly Known As ‘Video Girl’

FKA Twigs, aside from her syrupy vocals, is perhaps best known for her trippy, abstract music videos. While there’s no visual accompaniment to her latest (supposedly leaked) single  ‘Video Girl’ yet, the song’s moody beats and weightless vocals easily align with FKA Twigs’ signature form.  When compared to her previous releases, many of which lean towards the abstract and focus less on lyricism,  ‘Video Girl’ sounds like a sharper, more personal, portrait of the singer, who, as you can guess, worked as a video girl before stealing the spotlight as FKA Twigs.

The ‘Video Girl’ leak follows a stunning Nabil-directed music video for her last release, ‘Two Weeks’ a breathy and powerful ballad in which FKA Twigs plays an anonymous, lust-driven goddess. The song feautures mezmerizing production, much like the rest of her album. It’s spacey, futuristic RnB, and FKA’s breathy, sometimes falsetto voice fits in snugly with what we’ve heard so far. It’s distinctively less sensual and relationship-focused than her previous work like ‘Two Weeks‘ and Papi Pacify‘, but still fits her spacey trip-hop, RnB style to a T.

In a recent Pitchfork interview, FKA Twigs describes her past role as a video girl, saying “There was a period of about two years where I danced for everyone: Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Taio Cruz. It got to the point where my fees were double the other girls’, and I wouldn’t even have to audition. They’d call my agent directly and say, ‘We want twigs to come in.’ I had a reputation for being reliable.” She says she wrote ‘Video Girl’ shortly after she stopped being a video girl, and struggled quietly to reinvent herself in the industry. She illustrates typical interaction after switching professions: “When I got signed, I stopped dancing—I’d given up that part of my life. I would go out, and somebody would be like, ‘Oh, I recognize you!’ I’d hope it was because they’d heard my music, but they’d say, “Are you that girl from the Jessie J video?” I’d always say “no,” and they’d be like, “You’re lying!” I’d say, “No! It’s not me.” They’d say, “You look just like her.” And I’d be like, “I know. So many people say that! It’s weird!” Dancing has always informed her work, but she says it’s not the focal point, “it’s the final checkpoint.”

Since it’s leak yesterday, it looks like the track has been removed from soundcloud, and most other online sources. You can listen to ‘Video Girl’ here while it lasts. FKA Twig’s debut album, LP1, will be  officially released through Young Turks on August 12th. Watch out for updates from FKA Twigs’ album on our Encyclopedia of Music.
