Today, late singer Amy Winehouse was honored with a memorial statue on what would have been her 31st birthday. The iconic jazz, soul and blues artist died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27. The life-size statue was unveiled in her beloved hometown of Camden in north London this morning. The bronze sculpture depicts the musician with her signature beehive hairstyle and a Star of David necklace. A live red rose was also placed in her hair for the ceremony. Scott Eaton, the sculptor who created the memorial, said he hoped it would capture her “attitude and strength, but also give subtle hints of insecurity.” Fans traveled from all over Europe and even as far as Hawaii to see the statue unveiled.

“It is like stopping her in a beautiful moment in time,” said Amy’s father, Mitch, who was fully involved in the design of the statue. “The hand on the hip, the turn of the head, the grabbing of the skirt, the turned in foot – these are all small elements that contribute to the personality of the piece,” he said. Her father added that although the sculpture was difficult to see at first, he plans on visiting it all the time. He gave the statue a kiss on the cheek as it was revealed to the crowds. Winehouse’s mother, Janis, described the likeness as “a definite wow,” and said she was pleased with how it turned out “because you can see that it’s Amy.”

“It’s a day of incredibly mixed emotions,” expressed Mitch. “They don’t put statues up for people who are with us anymore so it reinforces the fact that physically she’s gone but spiritually she’ll never leave us.” He continues, “I feel sad, very, very sad. We shouldn’t be here but we are, this is the reality and we’ve just got to make the most of it. So this statue is part of making the most of it. Getting people to come here, spend some time with Amy and put a flower in her hair and remember her in a very positive way. That for me is wonderful.”
