Salt Cathedral – Holy Soul

New York City-based, alternative pop group Salt Cathedral’s latest video for “Holy Soul” follows a seemingly mundane day in the life of a hotel worker. The video opens to its protagonist waking before the sun has risen. He goes through his morning (or evening) routine of brushing his teeth, dressing, and putting on his nametag, before heading to work. The music creeps in during a scene of his commute to work, and from there, we follow this character as he carries out his duties. Coupled with the lilting music, viewers can’t help but feel a slight sense of loneliness as the character works through his chores in various parts of the hotel; whether it’s in the laundry room, the kitchen, or the tennis court, he’s always isolated. As the song reaches its climax, the character experiences flashbacks of conflicts in his life, and his once unknown story is contextualized. At the video’s conclusion, he makes the decision to let go of his responsibilities, if only for a moment, to let his frustrations go as he dives into the hotel pool.
