The Canada music awards, known as the Juno Awards, were held on Sunday night. Some of the nominees at this year’s award show include Drake, Nickelback, Kiesza, The Weeknd, and Arcade Fire. Singer Kiesza won three Juno Awards on Sunday night including Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Dance Recording of the Year (Sound of a Woman), and Video of the Year (“Hideaway”). The Weeknd walked away with the award for Artist of the Year, and he also won the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year (Often).
Magic!‘s “Rude” was honored with the Single of the Year award, the reggae group managed to win the award over Drake’s hit “Hold On, We’re Going On.”High Noon was named Rock Album of the Year, and Arkells also won the Juno award for Group of the Year. Leonard Cohen nabbed the Album of the Year award for his Popular Problems project. The Fan Choice Award nominees included Drake, Michael Buble, Arcade Fire, Magic!, and Nickelback. Buble beat out his competition and won the Fan Choice Award, although the singer did not attend the awards show.
Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette received the biggest award of the night. Morissette was inducted into the Canada Music Hall of Fame on Sunday night. “I am deeply appreciative of this country. I love you and I thank you, and I thank all of the people who have supported me in Canada,” the singer said during her acceptance speech, which was received with a standing ovation. Morissette also performed at the Juno Awards show, which also featured performances by The Weeknd, Deadmau5, Kiesza, Shawn Mendes, Magic!, Hedley, Sam Roberts, Arkells, Bobby Bazini, and Lights.
The Juno Awards aired on CTV, which is a television network in Canada. During the show’s broadcast, fans unleashed tons of tweets on social in regards to their displeasure for the show. One of the biggest complaints was the Juno awards audio issues, and some fans complained they could barely hear some of the performances. The echoing of the microphones didn’t help the sound quality either. The live broadcast also showed a lot of the empty seats in the arena, where the awards show was taped.
This year, a lot of recording artists didn’t show up for the ceremony including Michael Buble and Leonard Cohen. Singer Jacob Hoggard, who hosted the awards show, was faced with a ton of criticism as well. Hoggard was heavily berated on Twitter for being unfunny and boring. Perhaps his funniest joke of the night was also very telling of the awards show. “Welcome to the very last Junos ever,” Hoggard stated.
