Bringing in a Funky New Year with Bruno Mars

My 7-year-old niece is doing a James Brown freestyle boogie in front of the TV. She’s dancing to the video for the song “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars. I ran over to the TV and turned it up as soon as we heard the first notes of the song. This is the song and video that she and I think is the most awesome lately. Suddenly, my uncle who is definitely an old skool funk man, comes in and goes, “I like this song, who is this guy?” That’s the thing you notice about Bruno Mars – his music is generally family-friendly.

The performance of “Uptown Funk” on the television show The Voice woke things up on the show in between the competition of the singing contestants. As if the horn section blaring like the soundtrack from a 1970s movie is not exciting enough, Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson (the producer) are both rocking pink hair curlers in their hair for the video of this song. This I suspect is the reason my uncle was so enthusiastic when he came running into the living room and saw the video; a throwback blast from the past a la Morris Day & The Time. That was his heyday. Check out Morris Day in the movie Purple Rain if you’re not familiar with this fashion statement of men rocking hair curlers from back in the day. It’s a hood-tastik fashion look if there ever was one!

Bruno Mars had another family-friendly musical extravaganza earlier in 2014 with his exciting Super Bowl performance, along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. These Super Bowl events can bring their own form of un-family-friendly scandal. Who can forget 2004’s “Nipplegate” with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake? Or the 2013 Super Bowl Reunion of the R&B party girls group Destiny’s Child being led by the Queen B., Lady B., Beyoncé? It was such a super sexy powerhouse performance that it’s rumored to have caused the temporary blackout that happened right afterwards. It was great fun for adults, but too over the top for the sensibilities of the average 7-year-old.

Watching your whole family boogie down dancing to the song “Uptown Funk” is great family fun. The only thing that could possibly make it more fun is if everyone in the family wears pink curlers in their hair while getting down to “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.
