Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga‘s Cheek to Cheek album surpassed 500,000 copies sold. This is Bennett’s seventh album to reach gold-status, and Gaga’s fifth gold-selling album. Cheek to Cheek entered the Billboard 200 album charts at Number 1. It sold over 131,000 copies in its first week. This was Gaga’s third consecutive Number 1 album. On the other hand, Bennett made history by becoming the oldest person to have a Number 1 album on the Billboard charts. Cheek to Cheek’s two hit singles, “Anything Goes” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” both reached Number 1 on Billboard’s Jazz Digital Songs chart. The album is nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
The Cheek to Cheek Tour will feature shows in Europe and North America. As of now, there are twenty-two shows on the schedule. The tour will also make stops at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Ravinia Festival, and several other jazz festivals. A few months ago, Bennett was asked about the notion that Cheek to Cheek is just a marketing ploy to give Lady Gaga credibility, “Lady’s a real jazz singer- an improviser who sings these songs differently each time we do them. I think people are going to say…Wow, we had no idea she could sing that well.”
Bennett and Gaga have developed a unique friendship since recording their Cheek to Cheek album, “The second we were in the studio together, it was so magical. We were bouncing improvisation off each other and we were laughing. I was keeping a whiskey under my stool because I was very nervous to be around him,” Gaga said in an interview. She continued by adding, “And then, gradually, we became greater and greater friends. And I think because of that, our singing became more and more honest and more and more authentic.” The chemistry between the 88 year-old legend, and the 28 year-old mega pop star has proven to be a surprising success. The album and tour have received rave reviews from fans and music critics. The Cheek to Cheek Tour resumes on February 8th in Los Angeles, CA at The Wiltern.
