Jay-Z signed middleweight champion, Andre Ward, to his Roc Nation Sports division. Roc Nation opened its boxing division last year in August, and secured the deal with Ward on Friday. The boxing champion has only fought twice in the last three years, due to a contractual dispute with Goossen Promotions. The details of how Ward was able to split with Goossen Promotions were not disclosed to the public.

David Itskowitch, COO of Roc Nation Sports, spoke about the recent signing, “We have signed Andre Ward and it’s something we’re very excited about. It’s just the beginning for us, but it’s a game-changer. He’s one of the best fighters in the world. Everything is coming together for us. On the same day we are having our first event, at Madison Square Garden, we are announcing our first really huge signing.” Roc Nation Sports promoted its first fight card on January 9 at Madison Square Garden. The event was headlined by welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison. Roc Nation’s DJ and music producer, DJ Mustard, was the designated DJ at the event. Fellow signees Fabolous and Angie Martinez, also made an appearance at the boxing match.

Andre Ward has an impressive record of twenty-seven wins, and fourteen knockouts. Ward is widely recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He is expected to become the face of the Roc Nation Sports boxing franchise. “I wholeheartedly believe in Roc Nation Sports and I just believe that they have the vision and the power and resources to carry their vision out,” said Ward in a recent interview. Ward has been through quite an ordeal in the past couple of years; he reiterated his excitement to get back into the boxing ring, “I’m just excited about moving forward. It’s been a grueling two years, but I can see what’s ahead in the future. No regrets. Unfortunately, these things happen in the sport, but it truly made me stronger as an individual and as a fighter.”

Roc Nation Sports also represents professional athletes in the MLB, NFL, NBA, and the WNBA. Some of Roc Nations most notable sports clients include Robinson Cano (MLB), CC Sabathia (MLB), Ndamukong Suh (NFL), Dez Bryant (NFL), Kevin Durant (NBA), and Skylar Diggins (WNBA).
