Legendary hip hop group De La Soul performed at Carmelo Anthony’s FAST A/W15 showcase. The showcase was launched in an effort to merge fashion, sports, and technology; the event was presented in MADE Fashion Week‘s venue in New York to help infuse the world of fashion with sports, technology, and business. “Through our relationship with Accenture, MADE Fashion Week continues to explore the frontier of technology and fashion,” Jenne Lombardo, co-founder of MADE Fashion Week, said in a statement. Lombardo continued, “This season, we’re honored to collaborate with Carmelo Anthony, today’s digital athlete, on this unprecedented experiential look into the cross-section of fashion, sports, and technology.”

The NBA All-Star is the co-founder of Melo7 Tech Partners, which invests in technological advancements in sports and media. “I’m very excited and honored to present this initiative in collaboration with MADE, Accenture, KATALYST LIVE, and Intel,” Anthony said in a statement. He added, “We hope to start a dialogue between fashion, sports, and technology through leaders that help guide and nurture future innovation.” Fast A/W15 featured fashion-forward athletic gear and sports-inspired devices. Hip hop recording artists Talib Kweli and Nas were on the list as special-invited celebrity guests. It seems fitting that De La Soul would be at an event that promotes innovation and progression.

De La Soul are well-known advocates of progressive music. The hip hop trio have released seven studio albums since 1989, including 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Stakes Is High, and Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump. The trio’s debut studio album, 3 Feet High and Rising, produced three singles including “Eye Know,” “Me Myself and I,” and “Say No Go.” Their most notable hit, “Me Myself and I,” helped grow De La Soul’s popularity worldwide; the song reached Number 1 on four US music charts including, the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs, Hot Rap Singles, Hot Dance Club Play, and the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart in 1989.

“Me Myself and I” is also in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. 3 Feet High and Riding was certified Gold, after it sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. The trio is a part of the Native Tongues group, which is made up of artists who promote positive thinking and good-natured Afrocentric lyrics. Besides De La Soul, the Native Tongues members are A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, and Queen Latifah. The group has strong ties to the Universal Zulu Nation which was formed by Afrika Bambaataa. Both groups promote positive thinking through progressive music.
