Johnny DeppAlice Cooper, and Joe Perry (Aerosmith) have formed the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires, and they already have a few shows lined up. They will play at the Rock in Rio (Brazilian edition) music festival, taking the stage on September 18th-20th and the 24th-27th. Rolling Stone magazine has also reported the band has already recorded an album, and fans cans expect to hear the new material at the music festival. There is also a possibility the band will release their music some time soon. Actor-musician Johnny Depp was in the news last month after he publicly criticized actors who use their fame to capitalize on their music career; the actor told the Sydney Morning Herald that idea of using their film career as a vehicle to make music is sickening. Depp did not say who he was referring to but there are several actors who are also musicians including, Billy Bob Thornton, Russell Crowe, Jared Leto, and others.

On the other hand, Depp plays the guitar, and he performed with Marilyn Manson last year at Los Angeles’ the Roxy; Manson and Depp also performed in 2012 at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards. The actor appeared on Manson’s cover of Carly Simon‘s “You’re So Vain,” and the song was released as a bonus track. Depp has played guitar on other artists’ albums too, including the Black Keys, Oasis, the New Basement Tapes, and Rock City Angels (band signed to Geffen Records). The actor considers himself a low-key musician, and he doesn’t feel he is using his acting career to gain exposure in the music business. “The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas,” Depp told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The actor said playing music occasionally is fine; Depp considers the music he has done with other musicians as recording music with his friends. “I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records, and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life…But you won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist,” the actor said. He said his biggest issue with some actors who are also musicians is they expect people to listen to their music just because someone watched them in a movie. “You should want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music,” Depp told Sydney Herald. He is definitely not going to make music his full time gig, the actor just released the film Mortdecai last month. Besides Depp, the movie also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, and Olivia Munn.
