Electro-pop trio Chvrches visited BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge and partook in the tradition of covering another artist’s song during their set. After opening the performance with a live rendition of “Get Away,” the trio selected Justin Timberlake’s break-up track, “Cry Me A River,” and the result of their cover was an unexpected treat. In their hands, Timberlake’s arrangement (complete with beatboxing and Gregorian chants amongst other instrumentation) was replaced with an electronic orchestra of sound created by Ian Cook and Martin Doherty. Timberlake’s signature falsetto was replaced by lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s vocals. Synth and keyboard supported Mayberry’s voice, which resonated with barely disguised fury as she called out her lover on the chorus. “Yeah!  Electro-Timberlake,” Mayberry proclaimed after the band finished their set.

Founded in 2011, the Glasgow-based trio released their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, in 2013. Inspired by Prince and Depeche Mode amongst others, the band records all of their music in a studio in their garage. The band was featured on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 soundtrack with their single entitled “Dead Air.” Chvrches is currently nominated for the British Breakthrough Act for the upcoming BRIT Awards, which has placed them in competition with fellow up and coming artists FKA Twigs, Sam Smith, Royal Blood, and George Ezra. The winner will be selected by a fan vote, and the results will be announced during the awards show on February 25th. The trio started working on their second album in the beginning of 2015, and release information is still forthcoming.

“Cry Me A River” was included on Timberlake’s debut solo album Justified. Written by Timberlake and Scott Storch and produced by Timbaland, the song was inspired by Timberlake’s high profile relationship with fellow pop star Britney Spears. In the wake of their breakup, the track skyrocketed to the Number 3 position on the Billboard 100. Timberlake’s most recent release was the second edition of his 20/20 Experience in 2013, which he was still supporting the album with a world wide tour in January of 2015. He has gone on to marry actress Jessica Biel in 2012, and the couple recently announced that they were expecting their first child together. The musician appeared on the 40th Anniversary episode of Saturday Night Live and was involved in the opening skit alongside Jimmy Fallon. You can check out Chvrches’ cover of “Cry Me A River” on BBC Radio 1’s official YouTube channel.
