BeyoncéCharlize Theron, Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep, and Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO) are some of the women who have signed a letter by charity ONE, in order to raise awareness for women’s rights around the world. More than thirty female celebrities, executives, politicians, and activists have signed the open letter. The letter was addressed to South Africa’s Minister of Heath Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and German chancellor Angela Merkel. Dlamini-Zuma and Merkel will lead meetings at the AU in South Africa and the G7 in Germany in June. Women’s rights and empowerment will be on the agenda at both events. The meetings are in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals in Addis Ababa.

Charity ONE timed the letter to be revealed on March 8th, which was International Women’s Day. Their goal is to “lift every girl and woman out of poverty by 2030,” stating that poverty is sexist. “For the girl who can’t go to a decent primary or secondary school or access healthcare, or who is forced to marry while still a child; for the mothers threatened with death when they give life and who aren’t allowed to decide when to have their next child,” portions of the letter read. The entire open letter can be read on the ONE website, and those who want to sign the petition can do so on the website, too.

The Global Citizen Festival is a part of the Sustainable Development Goals as well. Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin was named the festival’s curator until 2030. Martin will do his part to get musicians to join their movement, in order to end global poverty. There are seventeen goals in place, and if all of the goals are met, poverty will be extinct by the year 2030. Martin believes recording artists can play a big part in ending poverty, and musicians like Beyoncé can lead the movement. It seems Beyoncé has already taken the first step in helping the poverty cause, by signing the ONE letter. The R&B singer performed at the Global Citizen Festival last year, and she is expected to perform this year as well. The Global Citizen Earth Day concert will be held in Washington, D.C. on April 18th. Usher, No Doubt, Mary J. Blige, My Morning Jacket, Fall Out Boy, and Train, were all named as the event’s headliners.

FDRMX Eyes: India’s The Other People have recently premiered their music video entitled “So Damn Beautiful.” “So Damn Beautiful” addresses the empowerment of women, encouraging them to take a stand and be self-confident.
