Waka Flocka was set to take the stage for a performance at the University of Oklahoma next month; however, the rapper cancelled the concert in the wake of racist comments from one of the school’s fraternities. Over the weekend, a video circulated around social media that featured several brothers from the university’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In the video, the young men were heard chanting “there will never be a n****r at SAE.” Since then the school has publicly commented on the release and cut all ties with the organization; however, the damage was already done, and Waka Flocka refused to perform for the university.
In a statement released on his official Instagram account, Waka Flocka denounced the comments made by Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and refused to tolerate racism. The artist revealed that he experienced an evolution in his shows that creates an environment safe and enjoyable for people of all races. In the beginning of his career, he was performing for mainly black audiences, but as he picked up, more whites could be found in the audience. Finally, “it’s white, black, and brown people at my shows. All races partying having a good time and enjoying themselves together peacefully.“ The artist wants to continue this trend and foster a safe environment for everyone to enjoy his music.
He wrote that although he understood that the entire university was not responsible for the actions of the few fraternity brothers, he simply could not support the school with a performance. He ended the post by claiming “we can’t change history, but we damn sure can create our own future.”
Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the largest fraternities across America; however, the fraternity cut all connections with the University of Oklahoma chapter following this video. The chapter has officially been closed, and the fraternity’s house on the campus was shut down. Brothers were forced to vacate the home under police escort. Fellow students have called for the students to be expelled from the school and are planning to continue protesting the brothers until some action is taken. The university’s president has revealed that he is considering expulsion for the members viewed in the video. It seems as though the rest of University of Oklahoma is committed to Waka Flocka’s mission of creating a better tomorrow.
