Kristin Chenoweth returned to Broadway once again with a revival of the 1978 Broadway musical, On the Twentieth Century. Starring as Lily Garland, Chenoweth and her fellow co-stars, Golden Globe winner Peter Gallagher, Michael McGrath, Mark Linn-Barker, Mary Louise Wilson, and Rocky‘s Andy Karl, among others, opened at the American Airlines Theatre on Sunday, March 15th. The play, which is set in the 1930s, revolves around Lily Garland’s former lover, Oscar Jaffee, as he tries to persuade her to headline in his next play during the sixteen-hour train ride from Chicago to New York City, and is directed by Scott Ellis. Chenoweth, who is no stranger to Broadway, has starred in Promises Promises, Wicked, The Apple Tree, and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown; the latter earning her a Tony award.
Chenoweth began her career in 1993 with the role of Arabella Rittenhouse in Paper Mill Playhouses’ production of Animal Crackers after studying opera at Oklahoma City University. She has since starred in several off Broadway musicals, television shows, guest spots, and movie roles, some of the more notable ones being: The West Wing, Frasier, Rio, RV, The Good Wife (where she sustained multiple injuries including a skull fracture, broken nose, cracked teeth, and spinal injuries due to a piece of falling lighting equipment), Glee, Ugly Betty, Bewitched, and Pushing Daisies. Her role as Olive Snook in Pushing Daisies earned her an Emmy in 2009.
Aside from her work on screen and stage, Chenoweth has released five albums, her best selling album being, A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas, which peaked at number seventy-seven on Billboard 200, number seven on the U.S. Holiday Albums chart, and number one on the U.S. Heatseekers Chart. In 2011, Chenoweth released her first music video on CMT, for the song “I Want Somebody,” peaking at number nineteen on CMT’s Top Twenty Countdown.
In 2009 Chenoweth became a published author, releasing A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages, which spent two weeks on the New York Times Bestsellers list. Aside from On the Twentieth Century, Chenoweth is set to star in the Disney Channel original movie, Descendants, which is slated to air some time this year. The movie, which also stars Dove Cameron, Maz Jobrani, and Cameron Boyce, has the offspring of both famous villains and their hero counterparts attending prep school together by order of the king, who just happens to be the son of Belle and the Beast.
