Bassist Mike Porcaro of Toto Dies at Age 59

Toto bassist Mike Porcaro (59 years old) died on Sunday, after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Porcaro’s brother and Toto keyboardist, Steve Porcaro, made the sad announcement on social media. “Our brother Mike passed away peacefully in his sleep at 12:04 AM last night [March 15] at home surrounded by his family. Rest in peace, my brother,” Steve Porcaro wrote. Toto guitarist-singer, Steve Lukather, sent his condolences to the Porcaro family on social media. “My brother Mike Porcaro is now at peace. I will miss him more than I could ever put into words. My deepest love to family. God Bless,” Lukather wrote. Mike Porcaro was a member of Toto since 1971, but he left the band in 2007, due to his illness. Porcaro was forced to stopped performing with the band, after growing numbness in his fingers made it impossible for him to play the guitar. 

Toto has released twelve studio albums, some of which include Toto, Hydra, Isolation, The Seventh One, Kingdom of Desire, Through the Looking Glass, and Falling in Between. The Rock band’s fourth studio album Toto IV, was dropped in 1982. Toto IV peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, and it also topped the albums chart in Canada and Australia. The project produced four singles “Rosanna,” “Make Believe,” “Africa,” and “I Won’t Hold You Back.” Toto IV’s first single, “Rosanna,” reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. “Africa” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it became Toto’s first Number 1 song. Toto IV went on to sell over three million copies, and it received five Grammy Awards. Two of their Grammy Awards include Record of the Year (“Rosanna”) and Album of the Year (Toto IV).

Toto is still releasing music, and they will embark on their upcoming 2015 tour in Glasgow on May 21st. Toto will also travel to Scotland, France, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, Serbia, and more. The Toto World Tour will wrap on July 19th in Taormina, Italy at the Teatro Antico. Fans can view Toto’s complete tour schedule, and purchase tickets on Steve Lukather’s website. The band’s new album Toto XIV, will be released in Europe on March 20th. The North America, United Kingdom, and Oceania album release will be on March 23rd. The project features the singles “Orphan,” “Holy War,” and “Burn.”
