Sinead O’Connor revealed she will no longer perform “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which is the singer’s biggest hit to date. O’Connor said she is no longer emotionally connected to the song, and she can’t draw the emotion level that is needed in order to properly perform the record. “The time has come for me to cease singing Nothing Compares 2 U. The first principle of the manner in which I’m trained as a singer is we never sing a song we don’t emotionally identify with,” O’Connor wrote on Facebook. Her statement continued, “After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it.”

“Nothing Compares 2 U” was written by Prince, and it was released in 1990. The hit song reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it peaked at the top of the charts in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Since 1987, Sinead O’Connor has released ten studio albums including I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, Am I Not Your Girl?, Faith and Courage, Throw Down Your Arms, and I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss. I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which features “Nothing Compares 2 U,” won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1991. The album was certified double-platinum in the US, after selling over two million copies. It also peaked at Number 1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, and Canada.

The pop singer’s latest project, I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, was dropped last year. The project reached Number 1 on the Irish Albums chart, and it peaked at Number 83 on the Billboard 200 chart. Two singles were released from the album including “Take Me to Church” and “8 Good Reasons.” O’Connor sported a new look for this album cover by wearing a short black wig, which is a very distinctive look for her infamous shaved head. The pop singer once said she cut all of her hair off as a way to rebel against her record label, which wanted her to grow her hair long and wear short miniskirts. O’Connor also stated she wanted to make herself “as unattractive as possible” (via Oprah: Where Are They Now).

I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss was distributed through Nettwerk Music Group, which is a record label, publishing, and management company. Their roster includes Fun., Christina Perri, Passenger, Family of the Year, and Perfume Genius. In the past, Nettwerk Music Group’s clients included Coldplay, Dido, Barenaked Ladies, and Sarah McLachlan.
