Former Trick Pony guitarist Ira Dean will release his solo project entitled It’s About Time, and he said recording the album was a liberating experience. “It felt like somebody had just torn down a fence around my yard and I was a pooch running free. I’ve never been married, but it’s like someone who has been divorced and didn’t really know how to get back in the game but is excited and has all the freedom in the world,” the singer told Billboard magazine.

Dean said there are luxuries that a solo artist is granted, that aren’t given when someone is a member of a group. “With Trick Pony, we always had to agree on songs, and I’m a big fan of uptempo rockers, and I always felt there was a leash on us,” he said to Billboard. Dean added,”Now I didn’t have a label, I didn’t have Keith or Heidi, and I was just making music that I loved, and experimenting all the way.” The country singer said he also enjoyed having fun and just playing in the recording studio. “You could tell there was a party going on at the studio. We were playing just to make music. You don’t normally get that when you’re on the clock. I couldn’t be more proud of anything I’ve ever recorded,” he stated.

Dean told Billboard magazine that he’s not criticizing his former Trick Pony bandmates (Keith Burns and Heidi Newfield), but doing a solo album allowed him to recreate himself. Dean said that most people don’t know he can play thirteen instruments, and the guitarist actually got a college scholarship as a drummer. Dean signed a solo deal after he left Trick Pony, but his debut album was never released. “I made a pact this last year that I was going to finish an album before the end of the year. So I put the writing on hold and recorded fourteen new songs,” the country singer said.

Ira Dean’s new single “Nothin’ to Do ‘Round Here,” features Jeffrey Steele, Colt Ford, Montgomery Gentry, Lee Roy Parnell, and Ronnie Milsap. “Nobody in country had ever done an all-star band. I thought it would be cool to do something like that with all the guys I looked up to as players.” “Nothin’ to Do ‘Round Here” is available on iTunes.
