Timbaland, the four time Grammy award winning rapper, songwriter, and producer has recently had his dreams visited by the late Aaliyah. According to the producer, Aaliyah, who died in 2001 in a plane crash along with eight other people, came to Timbaland in a dream to offer her approval of the twenty year old rapper, Tink. During a SXSW set in the which Timbaland did a DJ set before inviting Tink out to join him, he told the crowd, “I don’t touch any of my sister’s records. I don’t touch Baby Girl’s records—you know that’s Aaliyah.” He went on to say, “She [Aaliyah] spoke to me in my sleep and said, ‘She’s the one,'” as he pointed to the Chicago rapper. Due to the sacredness of both Aaliyah’s music and image (Timbaland has been known to be very protective, allowing very few artists to use Aaliyah’s work and even bashed the Lifetime movie based on her) the crowd was a bit surprised to hear that Timbaland has allowed one of the tracks off Tink‘s upcoming album, which is due out this year, to sample Aaliyah’s track “One in a Million.”
Since his discovery of Tink, Timbaland has nothing but positive things to say about her, stating that, “The only artist you can compare her to is Lauryn Hill.” He has even went as far as to say, “Her album is probably one of the best albums I’ve done since [Aaliyah’s] One in a Million,” and confessing that Tink’s talent saved his life. Timbaland has been quite open regarding the friendship him and Aaliyah shared, and was deeply affected by her death. “She was like blood, and I lost blood. Me and her together had this chemistry. I kinda lost half of my creativity to her. It’s hard for me to talk to the fans now. Beyond the music, she was a brilliant person, the [most special] person I ever met,” he told MTV’s Total Request Live. In an E! True Hollywood Story that aired in 2011, the record producer, who also owns his own imprint called Mosley Music Group, revealed that he he had been in love with Aaliyah from the moment they’d met but that he’d kept his feelings secret due to their seven year age difference.
Timbaland, whose stage name was given to him by producer DeVante Swing in reference to Timberland construction boots, has recorded some of music’s biggest artists including: Missy Elliot, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, and One Republic.
