De La Soul have decided to join the new way of getting funding for an album… ask the fans to finance the project through crowdsource funding. The hip hop legends are planning on releasing a new project this year, and they need the fans to help them complete the album. “Typically the fans have been the one who support and appreciate our vision. So using Kickstarter and giving our fans the opportunity to be a part of the process just feels right,” the group’s Kickstarter page states.

The statement continues, “We see Kickstarter as a home for creative minds and a wonderful platform; where people who believe, respect, and see the vision can support an idea and make it a reality.” Those who donate to the project will receive a number of rewards including a Skype rap session with De La Soul, a gold record of 3 Feet High And Rising, De La Soul Nikes, and other gifts. De La Soul’s upcoming album will feature guest appearances from 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, David Byrne, and Damon Albarn.

De La Soul are well-known advocates of progressive hip hop music. The trio’s first studio album, 3 Feet High and Rising, produced three singles including “Eye Know,” “Me Myself and I,” and “Say No Go.” Their biggest hit single, “Me Myself and I,” helped grow De La Soul’s popularity worldwide. The song reached the top of four US music charts including, the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs, Hot Dance Club Play, Hot Rap Singles, and the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. 3 Feet High and Rising was certified Gold, after it sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. “Me Myself and I” is listed in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll music.

De La Soul’s fifth studio album Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, was dropped fifteen years ago. The album features production from Rockwilder (Pink, Redman, and Jay Z), and it also had guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys (Mike D and Ad Rock), Chaka Khan, Xzibit, and more.
