After months of speculation, Avril Lavigne has finally opened up about her undisclosed illness. While fans and reporters were speculating everything from substance abuse to a secret pregnancy to marriage problems with her husband, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, Lavigne was fighting an unknown battle with Lyme Disease.
The singer, who was “bedridden for five months” believes she contracted the disease after being bitten by a tick last spring. “I had no idea a bug bite could do this… I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move… I thought I was dying,” she said in a recent interview. While Lavigne had been dealing with symptoms for months, including fever, headache, and lightheadedness, it wasn’t until her thirtieth birthday party where her symptoms really set in.
The pop-punk singer asked her mother to move in with her, and she and Kroeger took turns taking care of Lavigne. While she now considers her illness a wakeup call, convincing her to “enjoy life from here on out,” she recalls there being times “I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
While Lyme Disease can start off with almost flu-like symptoms, if left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart and the nervous system. Lavigne, who tells People magazine that she is feeling eighty percent better, isn’t the only high-profile celebrity to be affected by the disease. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Yolanda Foster, suffers from a chronic version of the illness. While the majority of people who contract Lyme disease are usually cured by antibiotics, up to twenty percent of patients continue to experience symptoms. It is those people who are diagnosed with Post-treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, also known as Chronic Lyme Disease.
Foster, who has been very vocal about her journey with Lyme Disease, admits the disease left her unable to “read, write, or even watch TV.” Her ailment even prevented her from watching her daughters walk the runway at Tom Ford’s autumn / winter 2015 fashion show. “I’ve cried my eyes out for missing so many precious moments as their careers take off, while I’ve been forced to watch from the sidelines with great pride, inspiration and hope for a front row seat one day in the near future.” Foster is using her experience with Lyme Disease as a reason to reach out to Lavigne, tweeting, “Love my friend and fellow Lyme warrior @AvrilLavigne for sharing her story. #chroniclymedisease #WeMustFindACure #AffordableForAll.”
