While on a promotional tour in New Zealand, British musician Ed Sheeran received what he described as “one of the best birthday presents I’ve ever got.” What he received was a sword from the Game of Thrones series. Sheeran received the gift while making an appearance on the radio show The Hits Presents Sam Smith Live, and his reaction was priceless.

Ed Sheeran smiled from ear to ear as he opened the sword, claiming that he was so happy. As he opened the sword, he stated that he wanted Kit Harington to autograph it for him. Harington plays the role of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, and the sword that Sheeran received was a replica of the one that Snow carries in the show.

This is not the first time that the musician has received a sword as a gift. Sheeran is a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings series, and as such the musician was gifted with an authentic sword from the series in 2013. In a previous interview, Sheeran detailed a close call where the sword almost impaled his close friend and fellow musician Taylor Swift. It was a close call, but luckily everyone survived unscathed. They also ended up with a great story to share with fans in the future.

The fifth season of Game of Thrones is set for an April 12 debut on HBO. The show has been airing since April of 2011, and has received incredibly warm reception from fans across the globe. The show is based on George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, which were first released in 1996. At the beginning of the television series, each season was adapted from one book, but after hitting the third season in 2013, the producers split the show a little more leniently. This season will tell the story of two of the novels, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

The series is expected to run for seven novels, and the most recent, the fifth in the series, was released in July of 2011, shortly after Game of Thrones debuted on television. Both the novel series as well as the adapted television series have received a series of accolades and are closely followed by a large following of fans. Reception has been so positive for the television show that the sixth season of the show was ordered and has been in development alongside the fifth season. Currently, there is no news regarding when it will be released.

Sheeran has been in New Zealand on tour for most of this week. Earlier in the week, he performed a surprise show for a group of students at Radcliffe School after they won a radio contest. The musician also recently revealed that he would be hosting the 2015 MuchMusic Video Awards in Canada later this year. You can watch Sheeran’s reaction to his Game of Thrones-themed gift here.
