Ed Sheeran’s Song Puts Everyone to Sleep

With his lush arrangements and his soothing vocals, pop sensation Ed Sheeran has won his way into the hearts of people across the globe. His hits have been fan favorites and chart-toppers for the majority of 2014 and 2015, including his love ballad, “Thinking Out Loud.” According to Spotify, “Thinking Out Loud” is also everyone’s favorite song to listen to as you fall asleep. The music streaming service recently revealed that more than 2.8 million playlists across the globe help listeners fall into sweet dreams with the assistance of Ed Sheeran’s sweetly crooned vocals.

Spotify claims that their “Sleep” category is one of the most visited components of their streaming system. Angela Watts, vice president of global communications, commented on the phenomenon, stating that people use it for “general relaxation and to help themselves unwind.” Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is by far the most popular track on globally utilized playlists, but the streaming giant also revealed their current top twenty most-streamed sleep songs.

The top 20 most-streamed sleep songs list contains entries from a variety of huge names.  Ed Sheeran appears on the list 7 times with other hits including “I See Fire,” “The A Team,” and “Give Me Love” making appearances. Coming in at second place on the list is Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” and the musician makes it onto the chart three additional times with hits such as his current single “Lay Me Down.” The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is incredibly well represented as well. Coming in at third place on the list is Ellie Goulding’s contribution to the sexy film’s soundtrack, her anthemic “Love Me Like You Do.” Others who made the list include the likes of John Legend, The Weeknd, Birdy, Passenger, Coldplay, and Rihanna.

Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” currently has more than 300 million streams on Spotify, easily marking it his most popular song on the system. The single was released as a promotional single from Sheeran’s X album and rapidly became a fan favorite. Upon the release of a music video, the visual racked up more than 2 million YouTube views in less than sixteen hours. Currently, it has more than 375 million, and the number is growing every day.

“Thinking Out Loud” is also Sheeran’s highest charting single to date, having peaked at the number 2 position on the Billboard 100. The single was blocked from the number one spot by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” which has had its own groundbreaking run at the top of the charts.
