It’s been almost a month since Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba stepped in for Tom DeLonge at the Musink Festival with Blink 182; but for diehard fans worried about him taking a more permanent role in the group (or excited Skiba fans hoping to see him play the same stage as Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker) Skiba says that his future with Blink 182 is still unkown. “I don’t really know what the status is, but we are hopeful to do more stuff in the future. How soon that’s going to be, I don’t know,” he said in an interview with Billboard. Despite not knowing where exactly he stands in the Blink 182 saga, Skiba has been keeping exteremely busy. Not only did he need to learn twenty-seven Blink 182 songs during only two months, Alkaline Trio, where Skiba is co-lead vocalist and guitarist, has been preparing for their seven week upcoming tour (several of the dates are already sold out), and Skiba’s second band, the Sekrets, has their sophomore album, Kuts, coming out on June 2nd. Whether the Sekrets will be touring or not, depends on what happens with Blink 182 and while Skiba hopes to continue to fill in for DeLonge, he does mention that there are still plenty of things that have to be worked out before any solid plans or even any official statements can be made.
Skiba recalls when he was first approached by Hoppus and Barker to step in for DeLonge and says that at the time, he had no idea what was going on. Skiba admits he was just as shocked as the rest of Blink 182’s fans were at the news of DeLonge no longer being a part of the band, and that it took him an entire week to take in the gravity of what he was being asked to do. Skiba also confessed that while he and his band have toured with Blink 182 several times over the years, with Tom always being extremely friendly to him, the two have not spoken since the whole Blink 182 fiasco started. “Tom’s been nothing but cool to me over the years. His band took my band out on tour and that helped us tremendously, so I don’t have a negative thing in the world to say about the guy.” It’s his hope that DeLonge harbors no hard feelings towards him, stating that it’s nothing personal and he in no way intends to replace DeLonge, “I didn’t go up there and try and do what Tom did; they billed it as Blink-182 with Matt Skiba, so I went up there and did Matt Skiba.”
