Oscar-winner Common has joined the cast of Suicide Squad. Details regarding the rapper’s character have not been revealed yet, but most of the cast has been made public. Jared Leto has been cast to play The Joker, Will Smith has been cast as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn.Suicide Squad will be directed by David Ayer, and the movie is about imprisoned villains who were chosen by a government agency to perform covert operations.
There have been reports that Ben Affleck and Jesse Eisenberg will possibly make cameos in the film. Affleck is portraying Batman in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, and Eisenberg is playing the role of Lex Luthor. The rest of the cast of Suicide Squad includes Jai Courtney, who will portray Boomerang, the role of Rick Flag will be played by Joel Kinnaman, Cara DeLevingne will play Enchantress, and Viola Davis will portray government official Amanda Waller. Suicide Squad is expected to hit theaters on August 5, 2016. The film is currently in production in Toronto, Canada.
Common’s film career includes appearances in Brown Sugar, Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster, Street Kings, Wanted, Terminator Salvation, Dow Jones, Date Night, Just Wright, Bouncing Cats (voice), Happy Feet Two (voice), New Year’s Eve, and Selma. His latest film, Run All Night, was released last month. The movie also stars Liam Neeson and Ed Harris. Run All Night has already grossed over $50 million dollars at the box office.
This year, Common and John Legend’s “Glory” won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song (Selma). The rapper has also dropped ten studio albums, some of which include Resurrection, One Day It’ll All Make Sense, Like Water for Chocolate, Electric Circus, The Dreamer/The Believer, and Nobody’s Smiling. His latest project, Nobody’s Smiling, was released last year. It features the singles “Kingdom” featuring Vince Staples, “Speak My Piece,” and “Diamonds” featuring Big Sean. Jhene, Lil Herb, and Dreezy also made guest appearances on Nobody’s Smiling. The album peaked at Number 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and it impacted the Billboard 200 at Number 6.
