The Songwriters Hall of Fame will recognize Singer, songwriter, and pop icon Lady Gaga for her contributions to the music scene as a writer. The icon is set to receive the Hall of Fame’s first ever Contemporary Icon Award at the induction ceremony on June 18. The award will be in honor of Gaga’s “iconic status in pop culture.”
Lady Gaga’s discography contains a collection of songs written by the artist herself. Several of her biggest hits have Lady Gaga’s personal stamp of approval and individuality on them, including her breakout hit “Just Dance.” The 2008 single flew to the top of the charts and established Gaga as an act to watch on the scene. Now 6 times platinum in the United States with sales of more than 6.98 million, Gaga’s first hit has reached iconic status. Other songs written by the musician include “Poker Face,” “Applause,” and “Papparazzi.”
Lady Gaga recently made headlines for her impassioned tribute to The Sound of Music during the 2015 Academy Awards. She is currently touring with Tony Bennett and working on their second album of jazz standards while also working on her return to pop music. Gaga’s return to a pop aesthetic will symbolize her first foray into the sound since the release of Artpop in 2013. The album peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 but failed to perform as well as her previous efforts.
The release of Cheek to Cheek with Tony Bennett has symbolized a reemergence of Gaga’s legacy and a new wave of respect for her artistry. This was her first full album of cover material, but it topped charts across the world. Following the success, the duo have dueted on a variety of stages across the world. Gaga’s return to pop will also pair her with Redone, the iconic producer who collaborated with the songstress on several of her most well received hits over the years.
Others who will be honored at the 2015 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony include fun.’s Nate Ruess who is set to receive the Hal David Starlight Award. This is an honor awarded to young writers for their excellence and creativity. Previous recipients include Taylor Swift, John Legend, and Jason Mraz. Artists including Cyndi Lauper, Linda Perry, Jerry Garcia, Toby Keith, Bobby Braddock, and Robert Hunter will receive the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
