Courtney Love and Curt Cobain’s Bedroom for Rent

Ever wondered what it would be like to stay in the apartment Kurt Cobain allegedly wrote Heart Shaped Box in?  Well now you don’t have to. Brandon Kleinman, current tenant of the apartment where frontman of the Grammy award winning band Nirvana, and his wife, Hole’s lead singer Courtney Love once stayed, is renting out Cobain and Love’s old bedroom for $150 a night.  The apartment, which is located in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles, was occupied by the couple from 1991 to 1992 and is being rented out through the website Airbnb.  When Kleinman first rented the apartment he had no idea of its history, only after he signed the lease in 2011 did the landlord fill him in on the apartment’s back-story. Since then, Kleinman has used Airbnb to rent out Cobain’s room, which includes the leaky bathtub where Cobain may have written Heart Shaped Box (though it is yet to be officially confirmed) a few times a year and that every couple months “or so, I’ll get a weird, older gentleman, a rocker-type dude, sort of a burnout, knocking on the door, saying, ‘Do you know what used to happen here?’”

Photos of the apartment during Cobain’s time there surfaced last year showing not only trash scattered throughout the living quarters of Cobain and Love, who was eight months pregnant at the time, but graffiti over the walls as well paying tribute to Gerard Cosloy, Matador Records, Nation of Ulysses, and Hellen Skelter. According to journalist Charles R. Cross, Cobain’s “time on Spaulding represented his greatest immersion in painting.” He would often turn down tour offers so he could instead stay home and paint.  Kleinman, who has tried his best to improve the apartment since he moved in, believes that some of Cobain’s artwork still exists. “There’s latex painting over the fireplace.  I know there’s tons of art painted on the actual mantel of the fireplace. I want to see if there’s a way to get under the layered paint, to see what he painted under there.”

The reason the couple moved out of their $1,100 per month apartment during the height of Nirvana’s fame?  Faulty plumbing, which has since been fixed.  Apparently, Cobain liked to store his journals and artwork, as well as his guitars in the bathtub.  The leak not only damaged those items which were important to him, but also ruined the hardwood floors in the hallway.
