Blur has the Number 1 album in the United Kingdom. The Magic Whip has managed to reach the top of the UK Albums chart in its debut week. The project features the singles “Go Out,” “There Are Too Many,” and “Lonesome Street.” The Magic Whip is the band’s first album in twelve years, and it marks the return of guitarist Graham Coxon. Coxon left the band to pursue a solo career, even though his guitar playing is featured on all of the band’s studio albums.
The guitarist stated that The Magic Whip is his favorite Blur project. “At the moment, this is my favorite because it’s poignant. A lot of what Damon [Albarn] is saying with the lyrics would maybe resonate with someone who’s my age- feeling dislocated by technology, but also slightly enslaved by it, and worried about where it’s all going to end up,” Coxon told Metro last month. The guitarist said that Albarn is saying everything he is feeling.
The Magic Whip is Blur’s eighth studio album. The band’s other albums include Leisure, Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur, 13, and Think Tank. Blur’s fourth project entitled The Great Escape was dropped in 1995, and it peaked at Number 1 in the UK and Ireland. It features the singles “Country House,” “The Universal,” “Stereotypes,” “Charmless Man,” and “It Could Be You.” Blur’s “Country House” was the band’s first song to top the UK Singles chart.
Think Tank was released in 2003, and it also entered the UK Albums chart at the Number 1 spot. The project reached Number 56 on the Billboard 200, becoming the band’s highest charting project in the US. The album also impacted the albums chart in New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy, France, Finland, Belgium, and Australia. “Out of Time,” “Crazy Beat,” and “Good Song” were all released from Think Tank.
Even though Blur revealed they recorded two albums worth of new material, the band is not sure when their next project will be dropped. “Whether any other stuff from the recording sessions will ever emerge, who knows? But coming up with new music has never been Blur’s problem,” bassist Alex James told NME. For now, fans will just have to enjoy their newly number one project The Magic Whip.
