Free Music Downloads: Soul and Funk Albums

It is Friday and everyone is gearing up for the weekend. What better music to listen to to get you in the weekend mood than some soul and funk music? Brought to you as part of our Free Music Downloads project, this playlist will surely carry you to where you want to go tonight.

Number One: Jason BarrowsIslands of My Souldownload – The landscape of “Islands of My Soul” the debut release from Jason Barrows is, as he would describe it, “nostalgic and pretty bedroom pop.” Growing up playing in psychedelic and Americana bands in the Midwest, he spent most of his time shaping blurry sounds to support other bands. After spending time crafting music with fellow midwest songwriter Josh Garrels he started to discover that there was a potential to marry his spirituality and his taste for iconic musical expression.

Number Two: The Filthy SoulsThe Filthy Soulsdownload -The Filthy Souls are an interesting band, hailing from Manchester, England. They possess a creative energy that drives their music and electrifies their live performances. Their strength of voice transcends any era classification, while still giving just a hint of their many musical influences. Their obvious appeal to the masses comes from, as the Sunday Telegraph Australia calls it, a mixture of “Part Indie pop and part dirty, sexy rock-and-roll!.”

Number Three: Charlie FayeAmericanadownload – Charlie Faye’s latest album, You Were Fine, You Weren’t Even Lonely, has a Fleetwood Mac-by-way-of-Stax sound that provides a backbone for the emotionally raw songs. The album has won praise from American Songwriter, CMT Edge, the Austin Chronicle and The Bluegrass Situation, and Faye recently taped a session on NPR’s venerable Mountain Stage show.

Number Four: Silent ScreamsReal Music for the Souldownload – To continue on our theme of funk and soul music, we invite you to check out the Silent Screams. The top track on this album is called “Letter to a Black Woman,” and it is really soulful. This band also has some darker influences, such as metal, and they experiment with genre-blending. The result is a very unique sound.

Number Five: Ale DeeSans Vousdownload – This would not be a complete Free Music Downloads list without a little bit of French in it. Ale Dee is the stage name of Alexandre Duhaime, a French-Canadian artist and musician. He had his beginnings in the Mauricie region of Quebec. In March 2002 he won a second-place award at the “Hip Hop 4 Ever” event for “Francophone rap” category. Ale Dee’s launched his first solo album in 2006 and entitled Mine de rien, which has enjoyed a certain amount of success from the critics and sales.
