MØ at Bonnaroo

MØ at Bonnaroo: what is the correct pronunciation of Danish singer/songwriter’s name? She tells us, “It’s like ‘mooer’. Or Mo. Or Moo. Or anything.” Her full name is Karen Marie Ørsted, and she is 26 years old. The name MØ itself is Danish for “maid” or “virgin”. The young musician crash-landed on our radar screen in 2013, and she has spent the last two years gunning for glory. He debut album No Mythologies to Follow is a unique blend of pop, soul, punk, electro-funk, all mixed together with some sweet bedroom beats. She has also produced several interesting collaborations and been on tour relentlessly. If anyone deserves to break into the big leagues, it’s this girl. Ørsted grew up on an island called Funen, one of Denmark’s largest. Even from an early age her music has been infused with a kind of bittersweet heartache. Her first single was entitled, “Don’t Believe What People Say”. She was always very hungry for pop inspirations, and from an early age she was involved with political causes such as the anti-fascism movement. When she was only 18 years old she formed a trashy electro-pop punk band with a school friend, but was also writing her own songs at the same time, experimenting with a variety of styles and sounds on her laptop in her bedroom. So in 2009 she started her solo project that has propelled her to this point in time. Her style has evolved over the years into the mature, subtle, sophisticated punk female presence that knocked crowds dead at Bonnaroo.
