Justin Bieber is 21 years old, and for the past several months to mature pop star has been on a mission to re-brand himself. He has called in favors at Comedy Central and with Carly Rae Jepsen, and now he appears to be seeking help from above. His intention appears to be to undo the years of bad press that he endured as a pre-teen pop sensation. He flew all the way to Sydney, Australia in order to attend a luncheon hosted by the Hillsong Church conference.
The Hillsong Church was founded in Sydney but has several international offshoots. Organizers of this year’s conference confirmed that Bieber was a “delegate” of their pentecostal mega-church in North America. Bieber arrived at the Sydney international airport in a private jet on Monday morning. It is his fifth time in the country, despite an interview in March last year (pre-rebrand) in which he said he could not remember if he had ever been.
This time, however, Bieber is in the country as a supporter of Hillsong. The church explained that Bieber will not be performing at the conference. “People come from across the world to Sydney each year to attend Hillsong conference,” a spokesperson said. “Justin is here – like tens of thousands of others – as a delegate who is seeking to build stronger foundations into his life.”
“He is not participating in the conference in any other capacity,” the church said. “Out of respect for his privacy we will not be making further comments.” Bieber has been promoting the church on his social media profiles, and he was spotted at a Hollywood night club a week ago with Hillsong pastor Joel Houston.
There have been conflicting reports as to which of Bieber’s many love interests will be accompanying him to the luncheon in Sydney. Disney princess Selena Gomez and model Hailey Baldwin are both rumored to be down under for the conference. Hailey Baldwin is the 18 year-old daughter of Hollywood actor Stephen Baldwin. She denies that she and Bieber are a couple.
