See the Science Behind Your Favorite Buttery Snack

When you hear the word “corn,” what immediately pops (no pun intended) into your head? Probably a long, yellow ear enveloped by bright green husks, flowing gently in a field in the Midwest. Probably not a giant bowl of popcorn. Many of us view popcorn as simply a healthy snack at home or an excuse to eat butter at the movies, and not much else. In fact, popcorn was the first kind of corn to be domesticated, which happened about 1,000 years ago. Here, NPR and producer Adam Cole get up close and personal with one of the world’s favorite grains (and one of our favorite snacks).
