Science Behind Formation of Garbage Islands Revealed

Our planet currently has five separate masses of garbage accumulating in our oceans; we call them garbage islands. Though we are more than aware that these garbage islands exist, until now it hasn’t been clear why they formed where they are, not to mention how they’re sticking together. According to this video, our planet’s five garbage islands formed because of current flow patterns in the ocean. The video shows this with a time lapse animation of buoy movements over a 35-year period. The buoys accumulate where the garbage islands are, enforcing the idea that ocean currents have encouraged the formation of these garbage piles. Watch the cool time lapse below.
