Ambient music is our free download of the day. It is a genre of music that puts an emphasis on tone and atmosphere, instead of the traditional qualities that we look for in music. It is said to evoke an “atmospheric”, “visual” or “unobtrusive” quality. To quote one artist of this musical genre, “Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular.” We think that is very interesting, and we especially recommend listening to ambient music while at work. Check out some music from the following young artists:
Giles Corey – Spectral Bride – download – Check out this track from one emerging artist. As a genre, ambient music originated in the UK in the 1970’s. It was a time when new sound-making devices such as the synthesizer were being introduced to a wider market of DIY musicians.C418 – Droopy Likes Ricochet – download – Then switch it up with this track from Droopy Likes Ricochet. Ricochet’s style developed from the experimental and synthesizer-oriented sounds of the period. This artist names Mike Oldfield and Vangelis as major influencers on his work. Robert Fripp and Brian Eno are also prominent influencers in the genre as a whole.
Marriages – Ride in My Place – download – I love this artist, an offshoot of more experimental kind of inspiration. For example, two notable influencers, the Orb and Aphex Twin, gained commercial success in this arena in the early 1990s. Since then, ambient compositions have come to be quite lengthy.
Sergey Eybog – Everlasting Summer – download – Sergey Eybog had a revival towards the late 1980s with the prominence of house and techno music. Eventually, ambient grew a cult following in the 1990s.
Stellardrone – Red Giant – download – Stellardrone’s music can be compared to that of Aphex Twin, which in the early 1990’s began producing ambient house, ambient techno and IDM music. Genre offshoots include dark ambient, ambient house, ambient industrial, ambient dub, psybient and ambient trance. I especially enjoy the psychedelic quality of Stellardrone’s music.
