We already brought you part one of our list of 15 things you probably did not know about Chubby Checker, and now we’re back with part two! Check out eight more fascinating facts about the singer and musician that you definitely (probably) did not know below. You might be surprised by what you find out!
Number Eight: He Cares About Medicare Law. In 2009, Checker was part of a Public Service Announcement that was supposed to help launch a campaign to make changes in Medicare law. He recorded the announcement for the Social Security Administration.
Number Seven: He Protested the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2002, Checker claimed that “The Twist” was not getting enough airplay, so he protested the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Seymour Stein, responded, “I think that Chubby is someone who will be considered. He has in certain years.”
Number Six: He Sued HP. Checker sued HP in 2013 over an application that was called “Chubby Checker.” The application was meant to unscientifically use a person’s shoe size to estimate penis size.
Number Five: He Was a Millionaire by the Age of 22. Checker was one of the youngest millionaires of his generation, and he made his first million by the time he was just 22 years old. When he was 22, he proposed to Catharina Lodders, who was Miss World in 1962. They got married in 1964.
Number Four: He Has an Athletic Daughter. Checker’s daughter is Mistie Bass, who is in the WNBA. Looks like he was able to pass down some of his talents!
Number Three: He Wrote a Very Strange Open Letter in 2001. In 2001, Checker wrote an open letter in Billboard magazine, in which he claims that he is among Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Walt Disney in terms of greatness.
Number Two: He Claims He Invented “dancing apart to the beat.” In the same letter mentioned above, Checker claims that “dancing apart to the beat is the dance that we do when we dance apart to the beat of anybody’s music and before Chubby Checker it could not be found!” Basically, he says that he invented the act of dancing to the beat of a song across from somebody without actually touching them.
Number One: He Holds a Recording Record. Checker is the only artist in all of history to have five albums in the Top 12 simultaneously. Clearly, the man has talent.
