Demi Lovato: ‘Cool for the Summer’ Music Video Review

It’s been quite a while since 22-year-old ex-Disney starlet Demi Lovato has released new music. Her fourth studio album, Demi, came out over two years ago in 2013, and since then, Demi has not spoken much about her upcoming projects. That is, until now. Fear not Lovatics, Demi just released the music video for her latest single, “Cool for the Summer,” and it will make you want to hit the replay button over and over again.

As always, Demi’s voice blows me away in “Cool for the Summer.” I have always admired her outstanding range, and she showcases her insane vocal ability very well in this track. In particular, her riffs and runs on top of the last chorus leave me absolutely speechless every time I hear them. I also love the way Demi’s voice glides over the notes in this song as she sings, “Don’t be scared ’cause I’m your body type.” It’s a truly unique sound and arguably the most captivating moment of the entire song.

Throughout the music video for “Cool for the Summer,” Demi struts her stuff in a series of scenes that involve neon lights, vintage cars, minimal clothing, and high-energy dancing. As I watched this music video, I noticed that the different clips of Demi and her friends dancing and partying are cut in sync with the instrumentals in this track. I really admire this small detail because it pulls the whole video together and makes it very sharp.

My main criticism for this video is that the whole production is quite over-sexualized. While Demi looks gorgeous throughout the entire video, her outfits are a little raunchy and leave just a bit too little to the imagination. Not to mention, there is a shot that solely depicts Demi grabbing her butt and walking away from the camera. For what purpose? That is yet to be determined. The lyrics in this track are also somewhat cliché and unoriginal. Demi sings, “Got my mind on your body / And your body on my mind / Got a taste for the cherry / I just need to take a bite,” which many critics have pointed out are quite similar to Katy Perry’s lyrics in “I Kissed A Girl.”
