Sam Hunt: ‘Take Your Time’ Single Review

Sam Hunt won’t be conforming to the standards of country music anytime soon, that much is evident with his single, “Take Your Time.” The song begins with a half-sung, half-spoken verse, and yes, as the song progresses you can hear hints of country music attempting to sneak in. Yet, I still find it difficult to place this song in the country music category. Is that such a bad thing though?

I am new to Sam Hunt’s music, so when I first listened to “Take Your Time,” I loved it for what it was – a unique and catchy song. The subject matter, though familiar, is presented in a way that makes you forget you’re listening to a story that’s been told before. Sam Hunt takes the narrative of a guy meeting a girl in a bar and gives it a twist. I mean, as a girl, you can’t help but smile when you hear the line, “and I’m sure one of your friends is about to come over here / ’Cause she’s supposed to save you from random guys.”

When doing my research on Sam Hunt, I was surprised to find out that he’s considered to be country music. That aspect may be more evident when listening to his entire album, Montevallobut if this song were to stand alone, I would find it difficult to believe that his music is currently climbing the country charts. Again, I’m not saying this is a bad thing; it may just be what’s making him stand out from the rest. “Take Your Time” is unique in the way that Sam Hunt decided to execute the song. It begins with the smooth sounding verses and slowly falls into a beautifully sung chorus. Whether you like him because he is choosing to pave a new path for himself in the country music scene or you dislike him because he is getting recognition as a country artist (despite the fact that you don’t consider his music to be country), there’s no denying Sam Hunt is talented.
