“Tear In My Heart” is alternative rock duo Twenty One Pilots’s second single from their last album Blurryface. An awesome track with an incredible number of dimensions, “Tear In My Heart” has multiple layers that, once revealed, make this song even more exciting and intriguing than before.

“Tear In My Heart” is the perfect blend between pop, alternative rock, and EDM. Each of these genres distinctly appears in this song and fully engages the listener with their presence. Most of the song is driven by a heavy rhythmic guitar, but the end of the track fuses this guitar with a fun EDM beat. The bridge, which includes whistling and snapping, is reminiscent of early Never Shout Never and transports the listener back in time to the late 2000s. Twenty One Pilots were not afraid to push boundaries and norms with this song and it undoubtedly paid off.

Twenty One Pilots members Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun also play with dynamics quite a bit in this track. The song starts with Joseph and Dun singing at an average volume to a steady rock beat. However, as the song progresses into the chorus, the raspiness in Joseph’s and Dun’s voices can be heard as they scream the lyrics at the top of their lungs. As the song ends, the dynamics change once again, and the last instrument heard is a piano fading into the distance.

Furthermore, the lyrics to this song are quite intriguing and much different than a typical pop or rock song. One of the reasons I love this song so much is because its lyrics are much more honest and slightly darker than most lyrics tend to be. For example, some of the lyrics in this track include “Sometimes you’ve got to bleed to know / That you’re alive and have a soul” and “I’m driving here I sit, cursing my government / For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement.”

Overall, Twenty One Pilots did an amazing job creating this song, as they did with all of the tracks on Blurryface. Twenty One Pilots is one of the most original acts in the music industry today, and I look forward to seeing where they go next with their music.
