It’s only a matter of time before Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest single “Run Away With Me” becomes a global pop hit that you can’t get out of your head. Seven months ago, the Canadian-born artist released the official music video for this track, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

The music video for “Run Away With Me” follows Carly through Paris, New York, and Japan, as she explores each city with her cameraman (and presumably her music video “boyfriend”) in tow. Carly sings into the camera as she visits landmarks in each city and dances the whole time as well. Without a doubt, my favorite part of the video is the fact that every shot is filmed with a vintage filter, which gives the overall video a really cool “homemade” effect. The viewer feels as if they’re watching Carly’s home videos rather than a professionally created music video, which I truly enjoyed.

“Run Away With Me” is a phenomenal track as well. It has all of the elements a hit pop song needs: an extremely catchy hook, a fun dance-pop beat, and excellent vocals. Before listening to this track, I was unsure of Carly’s true vocal ability. However, all of my concerns were thrown away as soon as I heard her sing on this record. At the end of the track, Carly sings an incredible harmony that renders me speechless.

In the past, many have criticized Carly Rae Jepsen for creating songs that are far too immature for her age. However, I truly believe that “Run Away With Me” is the perfect song to help her transition into a more “adult” sound. In contrast to the bubblegum pop lyrics in “Call Me Maybe”, in this track, Carly sings, “Oh baby, take me to the feeling / I’ll be your sinner, in secret / When the lights go out / Run away with me.” Despite the maturation in lyrics, Carly still manages to keep the song enjoyable for all ages with a fun instrumental melody and upbeat rhythm.

Overall, I wholeheartedly believe that “Run Away With Me” is a step in the right direction for Carly Rae Jepsen. At 30 years old, she is still fine-tuning her sound, and if her songs keep getting more and more mature from this day on, I cannot wait to hear what she produces next. “Run Away With Me” is the first track on Carly’s third studio album E·MO·TION and is currently available for purchase on iTunes.
