Sex and the City: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

If you were to research the top female television show casts, Sex and the City would be near the top. After premiering in 1998, the show opened the door for more discussion of bedroom activities on television and the importance of girlfriends. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte didn’t keep much from each other, but here are some facts about these fabulous ladies you may not know.

Number Fifteen: Beauty Was Pain On a Daily Basis To Play Carrie

Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw) spent over 18 hours a day in heels while filming. With all those glamorous shoes though has come a mountain of foot trouble for the actress who has been advised to switch the stilettos for flats on a more regular basis.

Number Fourteen: Samantha Almost Wasn’t In Sex and the City

Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones) turned down the role of Samantha twice before producer Darren Starr’s boyfriend convinced her to do the pilot episode. Thankfully, she eventually accepted the role.

Number Thirteen: Mr. Big Was a Mystery Man

Chris Noth’s character Mr. Big was only mentioned as Mr. Big for the entire series. His first name was not even mentioned until the final episode of the series and his whole name was not revealed until the movie Sex and the City (2008).

Number Twelve: It’s An Award Winner

Sex and the City was the first cable series to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy. It was also nominated for 24 Golden Globe Awards, it won eight.

Number Eleven: The Costume Designers Were Sneaky

Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) does not have pierced ears. To cover this up, all of her characters earrings were clip-ons which were made by designers sending earrings to a jeweler to be remade as clip-ons.

Number Ten: Unlike Everyone Else, Carrie Actually Likes Her Apartment

During the entire 12 seasons of the show, every character gets a new apartment except Carrie. And really who could blame her with that gorgeous West Village one bedroom (even though she says its on 72nd St.).

Number Nine: Samantha Isn’t A Family Woman

Each character’s family makes a small appearance, except for Samantha’s. We see Charlotte’s brother, Miranda’s sister and Carrie’s father makes a photo appearance but Samantha’s family is nonexistent.

Number Eight: The Fourth Wall Was Broken

If you look at the first season of the show, Carrie breaks the fourth wall quite frequently when she talks directly to the camera. Other characters do this occasionally too, but by the third season this tactic had been phased out. Stay tuned for part two of our series on Sex and the City coming soon!
