Number Fourteen: She Won an Oscar for a Non-English Part

Cotillard is, along with Robert DeNiro (The Godfather), Sophia Loren (La Ciociara) and Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful), the only performer to ever win a leading acting Academy Award for a solely non-English part. Impressive!

Number Thirteen: She Always Dreamed of Playing Lady Macbeth

And she finally made her dream come true with Justin Kurzel’s cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, which just came out. The actress explained she always thought she would end up working on a French theatrical production for Macbeth instead.

Number Twelve: She Has Starred in Four Films Featuring Edith Piaf

First it was the French dramas Chloé and Love Me if You Dare, which both have ‘La Vie en Rose’ in the soundtrack. In 2007, Cotillard impersonated Piaf herself in La Vie en Rose. Three years later, the actress would also appear in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, which counts with Piaf in its soundtrack.

Number Eleven: She Tried to Shrink Her Body to Resemble Piaf

Edith Piaf was 4’8″, far below Cotillard’s 5’6″. The French actress wanted to resemble the legendary singer as much as possible, so she tried to shrink her body by crippling her form.

Number Ten: She Is an Environmental Activist

The French beauty, a member, and spokesperson for Greenpeace, is known for her fierce campaigning for animal rights, which made her feel extremely guilty while filming Rust and Bone. In the movie, Cotillard portrays an orca trainer who ends up legless after an accident involving these whales. “I had to do the job, but I will never go back to a Marineland. I respect the trainers, but I don’t understand how you put such an animal in a swimming pool.”

Number Nine: She Learned Polish for a Role

Cotillard had to learn some conversational Polish for her role as Ewa Cybulska in The Immigrant. It was her co-star, Maja Wampuszyc, who taught her the basics to master the language in only two months. Maja later told the press that Cotillard’s Polish “is excellent, but it has a very German inflection.”
