The pig is a mammal that has been around for an astounding amount of time, both as a pet and as food. You may be surprised to learn that a lot of stereotypes about these animals are quite untrue. Here is part one of our list of facts about these creatures.
Number Fifteen: They Can Play Video Games
There was a professor at Penn State University who discovered that these animals can play joystick games and are even “capable of abstract representation.” He has been reported saying that there is much more going on in terms of their observational skills than we would imagine.
Number Fourteen: Pigs Are Genetically Close to Humans
We are not so different from these creatures. In fact, it’s possible to use pig heart valves in transplant surgery.
Number Thirteen: They Are Smarter Than You Think
You may have heard that pigs are smarter than dogs. This is true, but you may be shocked to learn that they rank fourth in intelligence, beat only by chimps, dolphins, and elephants.
Number Twelve: They Like Music
They have a lot of interests similar to humans. Not only do they cuddle up to each other at night, dream, and enjoy sunbathing, but they also like listening to music, playing with sports balls, and receiving massages.
Number Eleven: Pig Language
These creatures can communicate with one another using more than 20 different noises. In fact, they even have specific noises that mean things, such as seeking a mate or declaring that they are hungry.
Number Ten: Good Navigators and Fast Runners
These animals can find their way home from a very long distance, using their innate sense of direction. It has also been reported that they can run 11 miles an hour.
Number Nine: Sweating Like a Pig?
Most everyone in the English speaking world is familiar with this phrase, but not familiar with the fact that pigs do not actually sweat. This is why they like to bathe in water and mud, to keep cool. We hope you enjoyed part one of our list. Make sure you come back for the second part, coming soon!
