Black Sails is a television series based partially on history, and partially as a pre-story to the most famous pirate story of all time, Treasure Island. Fans find a unique mix of education and entertainment in the series. Here is part one of our list of facts you didn’t know about it.
Number Eight: The Walrus Will Never Sail
This ship was actually built on set, and is not intended for use in the real ocean. Instead, it will sail around the set of the show, in the gigantic pool constructed especially for the series.
Number Seven: Jack Really Created the Skull and Crossbones Flag
You might remember Jack Rackham’s obsession with getting the flag on his ship just right. This was based in reality, actually, and he was the first pirate ever to have the skull and crossbones flag on his ship.
Number Six: The Guy With the Black Beard is Not Blackbeard
There’s a character who has a long black beard, and whose name is never mentioned, which led some fans to speculate about him being Blackbeard. Now we know this can’t be true because Blackbeard does not appear until season 3.
Number Five: The Show Was Intended to Not Have American Actors
Zach McGowan is one of the only American actors on the show. Originally, they only wanted to cast Brits, but his agent happened to know some of the producers. Lucky for him!
Number Four: The Set of Black Sails is Gigantic
Many of the cast members have reported that they are amazed at the sheer size of the set. They say that it truly makes them feel as though they are in the world of pirates.
Number Three: The Urca de Lima Wreck Really Happened
A massive hurricane laid ruin to a group of Spanish ships transporting gold off the Florida coast back in 1715. One of these was called Urca de Lima.
Number Two: The Actors Portraying Jack Rackham Anne Bonny
These actors portray characters who were married, and they were actually together in real life! Not a lot of people know that.
Number One: Silver is the Bad Guy
By the end of the show, he will be the most wicked of all of the pirates. We hope you enjoyed part two of our list.
