Katherine Heigl: 9 Little Known Facts

Katherine Heigl’s acting debut came with That Night in 1992, and she became a prominent star with Grey’s Anatomy in the early ’00s. A few polemics and publicists later, NBC’s State of Affairs finally brought her back to the small screen and her career seems to be taking off again. We are reviewing some little known facts about the actress!

Number Nine: She Plays the Cello

Her parents made her learn to play the cello when she was in high school. Katherine Heigl took private lessons for a few years, but she never really enjoyed it. In fact, she though it was really annoying and used to cut class!

Number Eight: She Runs an Animal Shelter

Heigl founded Hounds of Hope in 2008, as part of the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, also established by herself in honor of her brother Jason, who died in a car crash when the actress was nine. The shelter takes in stray dogs who are about to be euthanatized in and around Los Angeles.

Number Seven: She Was in the Lowest Earning Movie Ever

With a total $30 gross at the box office, Zyzzyx Road is the lowest earning movie ever released on cinemas in the U.S. Katherine was already famous by then as Izzie Stevens in Grey’s Anatomy, but it didn’t seem to be of much help.

Number Six: She Rejected an Emmy Nomination

In 2008, Heigl opted out of the Emmy race because she “did not feel that [she] was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, [she] withdrew [her] name from contention.” Her decision angered the show’s writers and producers, who felt insulted by her words.

Number Five: Katherine Heigl VS. Duane Reade

The actress sued the drug and convenience store chain Duane Reade in 2014 after the company Tweeted an image of her shopping from one of their NYC stores. Heigl requested $6 million, but eventually dismissed the lawsuit after reaching a” benefitial agreement”with the company.

Number Four: She’s an Anti-Smoking Smoker

Heigl has been a heavy smoker for many years now and is often photographed taking cigarette breaks on set. However, she’s never been seen smoking on the screen because she thinks it’s a bad example for yoounger generations.

Number Three: She Lives in a Ranch

The actress, her husband and their two adopted children live in a Utah ranch, near Park City. They wanted to live in a quiet place, away from the noise, the pollution and the paparazzi, and Utah just seemed like the perfect choice for them: “The weather is so perfect. There are no real extremes in summer or in winter. The people are really kind and gracious and down-to-earth and normal. We really kind of found this little place of heaven.”

Number Two: She Dislikes Her Breakthrough Movie

My Father the Hero is a wild ride from beginning to end. Heigl, who was only 14 at the time, spent most of the movie in a thong swimsuit around her fictitious father (Gérard Depardieu), which sparked some pedophilia red flags. Looking back at it now, Heigl seems to be quite disgusted by the movie that made her famous: “It seems so gross […] There are still men who come up to me today and say, ‘You were really hot in that film!’ I was 14, for God’s sake!”

Number One: She Likes Rock Music

Heigl’s surprising taste in music includes bands/musicians such as Dave Matthews, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica and Sarah McLachlan. She can also sing and (kind of) play the guitar, which she proved in Jackie & Ryan. Who would’ve thought? Stay tuned for new celebrity lists!
