The song nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced today. Achievement in music written for motion picture (Best Original Song) include“Everything is Awesome” by Tegan and Sara featuring Lonely Island (from The Lego Movie), “Glory” by Common and John Legend (from Selma), “Grateful” by Rita Ora (from Beyond the Lights), “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” by Glen Campbell (from Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me), and “Lost Stars” by Adam Levine (from Begin Again). The nominations for Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Best Original Score) include The Grand Budapest Hotel by Alexandre Desplat, The Imitation Game by Alexandre Desplat, Interstellar by Hans Zimmer, Mr. Turner by Gary Yershon, and The Theory of Everything by Johann Johannsson.
John Legend and Common’s “Glory” won at the Golden Globes last weekend, and it is considered the favorite to win at the Academy Awards, too. After their Golden Globe win, Common gained a lot of attention for his powerful acceptance speech. Common said filming Selma has “awakened” his humanity. While Lana Del Rey was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for “Big Eyes,” she was left off the list as an Oscar nominee. Sia’s “Opportunity” was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award this year, but her song was not nominated for an Academy Award either. Ironically, “Everything is Awesome” is nominated for an Oscar, but it was not nominated at this year’s Golden Globes.
Songwriter Diane Warren is nominated for writing Rita Ora’s “Grateful.” This is Warren’s seventh Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Warren’s last Academy Award nomination was in 2001. Diane Warren’s other Academy Award nominations include “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (Starship), “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion), “How Do I Live” (LeAnn Rimes), “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” (Aerosmith), “Music of My Heart” (Gloria Estefan and ‘N Sync), and “There You’ll Be” (Faith Evans). This year’s song nominees lack the commercial success of last year’s big hits like “Happy” and “Let It Go.” “Everything is Awesome” is the biggest seller amongst all the nominees, selling over 500,000 copies to date. The Academy Awards will air on February 22nd at 7PM (Eastern standard time) on ABC.
